Music pioneer Scott Walker has passed away at the age of 76, his label (4AD) confirmed to Pitchfork.
The cause of death has not been revealed.
Walker started as a session musician and began recording with the Walker Brothers, scoring a #1 hit with “Make It Easy on Yourself”. Walker pivoted into a solo career, creating avant-garde and experimental music that would challenge pop norms. His album Scott 4 was a commercial failure upon release, but has since gained cult status.
Walker went on to record further work with the Walker Brothers and released Climate of Hunter in 1984, Tilt in 1995, The Drift in 2006, Bish Bosch in 2012 and a collaborative album with Sun O))), Soused.
Thom Yorke of Radiohead shared his condolences on social media.
So very sad to hear that Scott Walker has passed away, he was a huge influence on Radiohead and myself, showing me how i could use my voice and words. Met him once at Meltdown, such a kind gentle outsider. He will be very missed. https://t.co/v33Ey91hbn
