25 Years of Tom Cochrane’s “Life Is A Highway”

A quarter-century has flown by since Tom Cochrane released “Life Is A Highway.”

His most successful song ever, “Highway” peaked at #1 on the Canadian charts back in 1991 and #6 a year later in the United States.

A trip Cochrane took with his family to West Africa helped inspired the song. There he helped to raise awareness and money for the World Vision famine relief organization.

The international influence is obvious in the lyrics; places mentioned in the song include Mozambique, Memphis, Khyber Pass, and Vancouver.

Cochrane’s second studio album Mad Mad World was also released this week in 1991, (containing the track) won four JUNO awards that same year:

  • Album of the Year
  • Single of the Year
  • Male Vocalist of the Year
  • Songwriter of the Year

And would eventually reach Diamond certification in Canada, selling over 1 million copies (At that time, 1 in 28 Canadians owned a copy!)
