Today marks 98 years of Ella Fitzgerald.
The First Lady of Song was born on April 25, 1918, in Newport News, Virginia–humble beginnings before reaching extraordinary heights in the music industry.
Over the course of her career, Fitzgerald has won 13 Grammys and received the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 1967. Ella often collaborated with a variety of orchestras, big bands, and small jazz combos to create a vast array of jazzy records. From sombre to full-scale live productions, Fitzgerald released an endless amount of fantastic music from 1935 up until her last public performance in 1993.
She passed away on June 15, 1996 at the age of 79 after dealing with multiple health issues, including congestive heart failure and diabetes that resulted in both of her legs being amputated below the knee.
Twenty years after her death, her timeless music continues to live on and serve as a soundtrack in every avenue of our lives.
