Chris Cornell Tribute Concert Was The Perfect Way To Honour A Legend

The Chris Cornell tribute concert proved to be the perfect tone for the famed grunge singer gone too soon: lighthearted to celebrate his memory in a positive light, but solemn enough to feel the huge loss of a talent that defined a generation of music.

Fellow members of Soundgarden, Temple of the Dog and Audioslave were in attendance to remember their collaborator and friend. Foo Fighters, Metallica, Ryan Adams, Fiona Apple, and more also descended to the Forum in Los Angeles last night to perform and pay tribute.

“I Am the Highway: A Tribute to Chris Cornell” was organized by his wife Vicky, with proceeds going to the Chris and Vicky Cornell Foundation and the Epidermolysis Bullosa Medical Research Foundation.

The night can be best summed up by a quote from Jack Black, who spoke to the sold-out crowd in between performances: “Sometimes Chris Cornell would sing a note that didn’t exist,. Sometimes [he] would sing a note that was between two real notes, and it would open a portal into another dimension. I don’t know if that’s true. Like, maybe it was probably a real note – it was probably a C-flat – but it was the way he sang it like it ripped a portal to another dimension. You know that wasn’t just some studio magic.”
