Today is The Verve singer Richard Ashcroft’s 46th birthday!

The band experienced a breakthrough 20 years ago with the release of its 1997 album, Urban Hymns, one of the best-selling albums in UK chart history.

Hit single “Bitter Sweet Symphony” peaked at #2 on the UK singles charts and #12 on the Billboard Hot 100, but was marred by controversy: the string section is based on an Andrew Loog Oldham orchestral version of The Rolling Stones‘ song “The Last Time.” There was a plagiarism charge as a result, The Verve gave up all royalties for the song, and Keith Richards and Mick Jagger were added as songwriters.

Despite this, The Verve soldiered on, and produced many excellent singles until their breakup in 2009.
